Corporal Punishment And Its Effect On Children - 1617 Words
Discipline Styles Parenting styles in the onset of any childââ¬â¢s life is a huge determinate of what their future will turn out to be. Parenting styles are the normative prototypes that parents utilize to socialize and manage their children. Different parents employ different styles of discipline to ensure that their children develop to be all-rounded adults. Children who have been nurtured well by their parents turn up as self-regulated with disciplined behavior. Child discipline is thus a key parenting skill, and the choice of discipline style chosen varies from one parent to another. However, the different parenting styles produce different results and hence, some are either effective whereas some are not. This paper explores the effectiveness or lack of it, in reinforcement and punishment, corporal punishment, inductive reasoning, power assertion and withdrawal of love. Corporal Punishment Corporal punishment remains a much litigious and widely debated issue. It refers to the use of physical force towards a child with the intention of controlling and correcting undesirable behaviors (Lenta, 2012). In most cases, corporal punishment is intended to cause some degree of pain and discomfort on the offender. It might range from smacking, hitting, spanking, belting, strangling among other forms (Passini et al., 2013). Corporal punishment remains illegal in America, and psychologists disapprove it as a form of discipline style. Adhd An Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ADHD is an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A common medication that is given to help ADHD is Adderall. Adderall is a stimulating drug that contains amphetamine and dextroamphetamine (Shinn, Robyn). I believe that young children are often misdiagnosed with ADHD and they should not be given Adderall, or any other stimulant medication to help with ADHD; there are many other things to help treat a child with ADHD. Adderall is a common medication given to children and adults to help with the symptoms of ADHD. The FDA approved Adderall in 1960. Prescribed ADHD medications to children increased 45 percent from 2002 to 2010 (Lliades, Chris). Also only about seven percent of kids and teens have ADHD and three and a half million kids inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Secondly, another concern with taking Adderall is children developing psychotic symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, and delay the growth and development in children (Lliades, Chris). Katherine Kidwell stated in the article, Stimulant Medications may Harm Sleep for Kids with ADHD, that ââ¬Å"In addition to making ADHD symptoms worse, poor sleep leads to a host of other physical, cognitive, and emotional problems.â⬠When children begin to develop ââ¬Å"symptomsâ⬠of ADHD, parents begin to become frustrated and lose patients, so they think they need to go to the doctors and have their own child put on medication. It is very common that children are misdiagnosed with ADHD. Eighty-two percent of teachers and sixty-eight percent of undergraduates agreed that ADHD is over diagnosed. ââ¬Å"According to many critics, such over diagnosis raises the specter of medicalizing largely normal behavior and relying to heavily on pills rather than skills, such as teaching children better ways of coping with stressâ⬠(Lilenfeld). That is not necessarily the case, in young children, it is common for them to have a short attention span, hyperactivity, or make decisions with out thinking of the consequences (Shinn, Robyn.) It is very common for children to have most of the symptoms of ADHD before the age of seven (Lilenfeld). Every young child will go Adhd An Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD Stimulant Drugs What is ADHD? ADHD is an Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Any child can be sometimes inattentive, hyperactive or impulsive (www.library.iated.org). However, children with ADHD repeat these symptoms every day that have an impact at home and school. Childrenââ¬â¢s behaviors seem inappropriate for their age. These symptoms are present for at least six months at home, school, or with friends and affect a social or academic functioning. Also, these symptoms appear before the age of 12 and not associate with other mental disorder. ADHD is a medical condition which can be treated. The treatment for ADHD is a combination of medication and psychological and behavioral therapies (ââ¬Å"Understanding ADHD. n.d.).â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Scientists who published a new study concluded that about 1.6 million teenagers and young adults had misused these stimulants during a 12-month period and that 75,000 showed signs of addiction (Vedantam, S. 2006, Feb 25). Many young people use these drugs to improve their academic and professional performance. When you need to study before exams, you take some stimulants to increase alertness and attention. People become addicted to them and some have toxic effects. If you get addicted while you are a student in school or college, it can lead to greater problems, you can be excluded from educational institutions. Young adults 18 to 25 years old are more often having stimulant misuse problems than teenagers. Both men and women are equal in drug misuse, but women are at greater risk of dependence, they have a lack of control, while men are at greater risk of abuse. Some stimulants, like coffee or tea, people use every day to stay awake. Caffeine is the most widely used stimulant in the world. Coffee, tea, chocolate, and energy drinks all contain caffeine. People drink drinks with caffeine to increase alertness but it does not work for a long time. They can be dangerous if not taken correctly and abuse d. Some stimulants are available only through a prescription, and others are illegal (www.study.com). The central nervous system is ââ¬Ëstimulatedââ¬â¢ by stimulants.

Confrontation Free Essays
Confrontation Life can be hard sometimes when it comes to dealing with other peopleââ¬â¢s thoughts and feelings. Most people ââ¬Å"walk on eggshellsâ⬠around others Just to make sure no feelings are hurt. But, in the long run we are only hurting each other by not opening up and discussing the situation and a solution. We will write a custom essay sample on Confrontation or any similar topic only for you Order Now To be open and truthful to anyone or any situation is a good trait characteristic for any person to have in life. My first person that I knew was my number one to confront is a boy by the name of Colon, also known as my ex-fiance. We were dating for about 3 years and engaged for a year until about in the end of December 2013 1 realized that I did not want to marry him or anybody for that matter. I honestly deep down never wanted to marry him and still cannot tell you why it ended up lasting that long. I wouldnââ¬â¢t say that it was a bad breakup either. He understood and was accepting, I thought. Until, on my first date with someone else he stalked me and followed us around. After that point on he became obsessive at belittling and slandering my name all over social media sites. I asked Colon if we could maybe meet up for coffee one afternoon, to which he easily agreed. Upon meeting him, I felt no awkwardness or feelings whatsoever. After the standard small talk I got down to business. I used my I-statement, saying, ââ¬Å"Colon, I feel a little hurt and almost betrayed because on the one hand you said that there were no hard feelings and you understood why we couldnââ¬â¢t be together. You seemed to want to be friends still and were acting very cool. Then on the other hand I saw that you were posting some very rude and untrue things about me on faceable and Witter. Why is that? â⬠Colon kind of nodded and stated that he was the one who felt betrayed on how quickly I moved on with other men (which I regretfully told him). He also said how he felt that our relationship meant more to him than me, that is why it affected him and I was an ââ¬Å"emotionless robotâ⬠. Which I can agree on were all true statements. He said that twitter and faceable were like his personal diary where he can vent all of his feelings. I did apologize on that I did move on very quickly but I couldnââ¬â¢t help to feeling nothing for him so what was the point to sulk around? He seemed to be doing pretty fine though which he agreed saying there is nothing left to hold on to so whatââ¬â¢s the point? I politely asked Colon if he would stop saying such things about me on these sites where everyone can see it. That to some people who saw and believe in such nonsense would look at me different. He agreed and apologized saying that he did regret putting most of the comments on there and that it was childish. After that we talked like normal about how life was going and what we have been up to. I have not yet seen any other comments about me! It was tough to Indo a second person to confront because I didnââ¬â¢t feel the need to talk to anybody about anything that was bothering me. There was one random person that I could think of that has recently come into my life. I work at Mckay Dee Hospital as a phlebotomyââ¬â¢s and there is a very cute nurse there named Ryan. We have been talking lately, hanging out, and going on dates. Well, then a coworker told me a little rumor that Ryan happened to be married. I realized then that yes, that is something that really needs to have a confrontation. One day Ryan and I hung out and went for a elk around the local duck pond. We were actually discussing this paper and how I need to find someone else to confront. ââ¬Å"Confront me! â⬠he exclaimed. ââ¬Å"Alright, I am a little worried because I feel like you are not being completely honest with me. You act very flirtatious to me and yet I heard that you happen to actually be married. â⬠Ryan paused for about a second and Just replied with a miss, I am. â⬠I asked if he was happily married then which he replied with a no. We then discussed to why he was in such an unhappy marriage which sounded like result from getting married too young. It did feel really good to get that off of my chest and find out the real reasons as to why he was talking to me and know that he wasnââ¬â¢t a cold-hearted son of a pitch. Even though it is not completely innocent situation I know that there are reasons why he is doing this, which made me feel a little better. For the third person we had to choose somebody from our group. I couldnââ¬â¢t Just pick one person. I felt like I needed a whole group discussion for this. Now, I am not saying that groups donââ¬â¢t ever have problems. I feel as though our group does not give an astonishing effort for much at all. We all come to class and then go about our busy lives. That is why we donââ¬â¢t have to many problems because none of us seem to care. I told our group that I feel we all are pretty busy, which is a shame, that we never get together and discuss topics of class. I feel as if we come to class, say a couple of words to each other, say our goodbyes when class is done, then repeat until next class time. They all seemed to agree that maybe itââ¬â¢s time to start getting together especially since our group project and final group paper will be coming up shortly. Since then we have done our group revere project which I can honestly say was the most fun I have had in a little while. Our group became very close that day as we all Joked around and got to know one another. There are many tools for communication. Many people donââ¬â¢t even know they use in their daily life. These tools help many to understand each other in an effective way. Some of these tools include perception checking, which is the process of clarifying a nonverbal cue that was received by stating what behavior was observed, giving interpretations and asking the message sender for clarification of nonverbal u. I see this one as a very major useful tool in communication. More people need to learn that this tool can help all different kind of situations. Most rash and not to smart decision are based upon not understanding non-verbal cues or taking them in the wrong way. People Judge others based off non-verbal behaviors, but donââ¬â¢t take the time to look into what they are really thinking. I didnââ¬â¢t have to use much perception checking on Colon because all of his cues were not non-verbal, but actual thoughts posted all over the internet. That made it easy to know how he really felt, which I had to directly confront. Another communication tool is self-disclosure, which is the act of revealing more about oneself to others which includes thoughts, feelings, goals, fears, and dreams. This one is also very important for growing healthy relationship. To really show somebody you care use self-disclosure. This opens up oneself to others so they can get to know the real you and become much closer in similarities. Whether truthfulness is a good trait or not, it is easier said then done. Most, like me, have fear of confrontation because of the thought of something said to e taken wrong or offend someone. But, I have learned that if you approach it in a certain way (especially with I-statements) and have a positive caring attitude, it eases the tension of any situation. I have realized that talking and being open to people solves more problems than cause any. I can honestly say that I feel a lot better and it has improved my life to have discuss these issue with these people. I have never been one of self-disclosure but, my ways are starting to change in light of this new concept, which I believe is going to be one of the most important tools I can have in life. The Effects of Alcohol on the Human Body free essay sample
The effects of Alcohol on the Human Body Name: Institution: Introduction Today, alcohol is one of the most common substances that people abuse. It is an addictive drink that has become a popular way of having a good time or relaxing in social gatherings. It is among the most commonly used psychoactive drugs. Alcohol is a popular social phenomenon, yet most societies forget its effects on their bodies. Research has carried out in the recent years on the effects that alcohol consumption is having on people. The resulting data has been extremely negative. The introduction of Alco pops, led to a substantial increase in the youth population drinking alcoholic beverages. On average, young people start drinking at approximately age thirteen. Parental and peer influences are a major factor in these early habits. Before the legal age of 21; almost seventy percent of people manage to get away with at least one alcoholic drink. This increases the probability of adolescent consumption in the future. Alcohol, specifically ethanol, depresses the central nervous system and it has many side-effects. Cell membranes in the human body have high permeability to alcohol, so alcohol diffuses into nearly every biological tissue of the body once it gets into the blood stream (Dasgupta 2011, pg. 88). It starts affecting the body and mind from the second one sips it. After taking it for a while, one starts feeling more sociable, but drinking too much makes basic human functions like walking or talking harder. One might start saying things they donââ¬â¢t mean and behave out of character. Some of the effects of alcohol disappear overnight, while others stay longer or become permanent. Other effects are impaired judgment, addiction, poor mental health, hormonal change and withdraw as a result of deciding to quit. Alcohol affects most important organs within the human body. Alcohol interacts with the gamma amino butyric acid receptors located in the brain. These receptors are the center of inhibitory neurotransmission in the human body and is synthesized from glutamic acid (Miller 2006, pg. 23). First and foremost, it depresses the brain tissue, the nervous system and destroys brain cells. The problem with destroying brain cells is that, once lost they cannot be regenerated. Excessive drinking over a long period of time may cause severe problems to oneââ¬â¢s memory and cognition. Alcohol affects parts of the brain like the cerebral cortex; limbic system; cerebellum and the hypothalamus. The cerebral cortex is the center of voluntary muscle movement and it processes oneââ¬â¢s thoughts and senses. Once inhabited by alcohol, it slows down our bodies on reaction time and impairs judgment. This makes an intoxicated person more talkative and confident. Also in the cerebral cortex, alcohol increases the pain threshold. It affects the hippocampus as it impairs memory and causes inflated feelings (Miller 2006, pg. 8). The limbic system controls emotions and memory. Alcoholic effects on the limbic system occur when the intoxicated person endures memory loss and uncontrolled emotional outbursts. The cerebellum controls the bodyââ¬â¢s muscular movements. When it is affected by alcohol there is involuntary muscle movement and incoordination. The hypothalamus controls the bodyââ¬â¢s automatic functions and release of hormones. Alcohol affects the hypothalamus through sexual performance and arousal (Brigg 2010, pg. 71). An intoxicated person is more sexually aroused, though the performance is not as normal. The liver can fairly process alcohol safely when the drinking is moderate. Heavy drinking however, overtaxes the liver causing serious damage. A fatty liver is one of the first stages of liver destruction among heavy drinkers. It interferes with oxygen distribution and nutrition of the liverââ¬â¢s cells (Horsley 2008, pg. 94). Persistence of this condition causes the liver cells to die and form fibrous scar tissues. This is the second stage of the deterioration of the liver. Part of the liver cells may regenerate with proper nutrition and abstinence. However during the last stages of deterioration the damage to the liver cells is irreversible. Alcohol abuse is a major contributing factor in cancers, including mouth cancer and liver cancer, which are both on the increase. Alcohol comes second to smoking as risk factors for digestive tract and oral cancers. Research suggests that this happens since alcohol breaks down into a substance called acetaldehyde. This substance then binds to proteins in the mouth triggering an inflammatory response from the body. In severe cases, cancerous cells eventually develop. Alcohol alters the chemistry within the brain and increases depression risk. It is associated with various mental health problems. People suffering from either anxiety or depression are twice likely to be heavy or addicted drinkers. Extreme drinking levels may often cause psychosis. This is a severe mental illness that causes development of hallucinations and delusions of persecution. Psychotic symptoms may also occur when heavy drinkers suddenly decide to stop drinking and as a result develop a condition referred to as ââ¬Ëdelirium tremensââ¬â¢. Moderate drinking does not suppress food intake. It may actually increase appetite. Heavy alcohol consumption has an opposite effect. It causes euphoria, which leads to lack of appetite. As a result, heavy drinkers often eat poorly and get malnourished. Alcohol contains seven calories per gram thus is rich in energy. However, just like fat or pure sugar, these calories lack nutrients. The more calories consumed in alcohol make it hard for the drinker to eat enough food to get enough nutrients. Worse still, alcohol abuse displaces calories from required nutrients and interferes with metabolism of nutrients in the body. This damages the liver, the digestive system and most every bodily organ. Alcohol irritates and disturbs the stomach. Therefore, heavy drinking may easily cause nausea, diarrhea and also sickness. Alcohol also has a dehydrating effect (Newell 2004, pg. 39). This is one reason why heavy drinking may lead to a severe pounding headache the next morning. Hydration also determines the extent of a hangover. After drinking heavily, unconsciousness may occur and extreme consumption levels often lead to alcohol poisoning. Death can also occur in a situation where alcohol concentration within the blood stream is more than the blood. Alcohol may also cause death when there is asphyxiation from vomit (Haven 2001, pg. 3). Drinking too much alcohol is not good for your skin either. It causes dark circles under a personââ¬â¢s eyes and bloating. It also dries out the human skin and may lead to premature aging and wrinkling. Drinking heavily may cause acne rosacea (Taylor 2000, pg. 70). This is a skin disorder which starts with likelihood to blush and flush and eventually progresses to facial disfiguration known as rhinophyma. Conclusion Use of alcohol is a great, enjoyable and safe experience if used moderately and with caution. If one does decide to drink they should drink slowly and responsibly. A drinking person should always consume alcohol with food. A person should drink no more than one drink in an hour. Consuming plenty of water in between drinks is also very important and helpful. Pregnant women should not drink and also one should not drive under any alcoholic influence whatsoever. Mild and moderate alcohol use benefits the coronary system (Newell 2004, pg. 98). Generally, for healthy people, moderate alcohol is considered as one drink a day for women and around less than three drinks a day for men. This is considered the maximum advised amount of alcohol consumption. Healthy people refer to those women who are not pregnant, people who are not addicted to alcohol and without any pre-existing medical conditions. However, the quantity of alcohol safely consumed by an individual is highly personal and dependent on genetics, family history, sex, weight and age (Taylor 2000, pg. 79). References Brigg, J. 2010. Disc Jockey Buissness Essays - Brian Welch, Converts To Christianity
Disc Jockey Buissness I have been in the disc jockey business since I was fifteen years old, I own many different sets of equiptment and have been to conventions were the new lines are presented. I also work for Pioneer as a company dj representative so I know their line like the back of my hand. For my project I choose to shop around for new equiptment at two stores, with me I brought a friend who knew absolutly nothing about dj equiptment. I was amazed at my findings and it is becouse of this experiment that I will never shop at Sam Ash again. My friend and I went to Sam Ash music store in New Haven Connecticut, it is a chain music store that has been noted for their excellence in costomer service. We went into the DJ section of their store and started to brows the inventory. I did not talk to the sales man becouse I feared that my knowledge of the equiptment would alter my reasearch. The sales man apporch us with a cool slick mannor that was obviously an act to impress us the young hip crowd. Personaly right off the bat I disliked his mannor and thought it to be very insulting, but people will do anything for a commission. My friend explained that he was looking to start a buissness, focusing on wedding and Bat/bar mitvahs, he then stress our price range of three thousand dollars. I could see the drool on the mans face as he started to explain what we needed. He showed us three different types of speaker putting down the less expensive ones and praising the no price tag line which he owned. The man did not talk about range or peak power which are the man factors when I purchase speakers, instead he threw in terms like these speakers boom, they really kick. These terms were directed at a stero type which he felt we feel into. He then proceeded to demonstrate how great the sppeaker were by pounding the base through out the store. As a professional Dj bass is the last thing you look at , the quality of a speaker depends on vocal quality with a focus on the mid and high range levels. Needless to say these factors were not mentioned at all. The next item was an amplifier which he had the perfect one picked out, in his words it was a perfect match. The amplifier he choose was a high powered model with all the bells and whistles piece of crap. It may have been a perfect match as far as power goes but as far as a lasting reliable unit that wont fail it was not even close. He did not spend that much time on the amplifier becouse it was only a small precentage of the purchase. He than started to tell us how loud our system would be and how much bass we would have. The man started to use words and terms that would get us excited about the purchase. We explained to him that we had a decent cd collection and would like dual cd players. It was as if he completely dirgarded this comment and took us over to the turntable section where he put on the head phones and started to scratch and mix as he danced around the turn table telling us how great he is and how one day we could be as good as he is. I found humor in the way this guy tried to change our minds and go with the hip product that he demonstarated . After his little show and period where he praised himself , I said we dont want turn talbes we want cd players. At this point he acted as if I were not cool and he moped over to the cd players. The first item he showed us that he could get a really good deal on were the pioneer 700 s cd players, which I already own. As a pioneer representative I knew all the fetures how to use them and why they were better than the other lines on the market. The only feture that he used

How to Write a Reflective Essay â⬠Itââ¬â¢s Personal. BestEssay.Education
How to Write a Reflective Essay ââ¬â Itââ¬â¢s Personal. How to Write a Reflective Essay ââ¬â Itââ¬â¢s Personal Reflective essay assignments are common assignments in certain classes. Suppose you have just completed a major community service project as a field experience for an upper level sociology course. You have worked at a community center in one of the poorest neighborhoods, assisting with after-school activities for children. Now that your experience is over you must complete the project report by writing a reflective essay on your experience. You have never written such an essay, so obviously you are a bit stressed. This post should help you produce a reflective essay that will meet the expectations of your professor. Understanding the Purpose A reflective essay should include the following components: What were your beliefs or attitudes before this experience? How did you grow personally through the experience How have your beliefs or attitudes been changed as a result of this experience? Structure and Process Before you begin your essay, answer the questions above. This will help you develop your thesis statement, as well as give you the ideas you need for your body paragraphs ââ¬â in fact, the answers to each one of those questions can easily be body paragraphs. Prepare a brief informal outline of how you will cover each point in your essay. Write the body paragraphs. As you write them, be certain to add a lot of detail. If, for example, you came to better understand the struggles of children in poverty, what examples can you provide? Is there an anecdote that really brought you to this understanding? Remember, this essay is personal. Write the Introduction: Part of learning how to write a good reflective essay means that you understand what information your introduction should include. You want to keep it relatively short. You will introduce the experience you had ââ¬â a field experience, a play you saw, a trip to see a specific exhibit at the art museum ââ¬â the topic of your reflective essay, in other words. You will also want to make a general statement that will be your thesis. For example, you might say, ââ¬Å"The chance to view this exhibit of post-modern art has changed my original negative attitude toward this period.â⬠The other tip here is to begin that introduction with something pretty compelling. ââ¬Å"When I was introduced to Johnny, he just looked up at me and scowled. My work was obviously cut out for me!â⬠Your Conclusion: Here is where you are going to sum up your overall response to your experience, how it impacted and/or changed you and what you will carry with you from that experience. Some Additional Tips If your experience was more negative than positive, you should be honest. If viewing the exhibit of post-modern art did not change your opinion of it, say so, and be certain to say why. Confirmation of a previously held belief or attitude is just as important as having your attitude change. You can be more informal in this essay, because it will be written from the first person. Report of the death of Vicky Margaret who died at Albany hospital Case Study
Report of the death of Vicky Margaret who died at Albany hospital - Case Study Example Vicky Margaret was involuntarily admitted at Albany Hospital because the doctors found out that she had a mental illness, which could not allow her to make an informed decision about whether to get treatment (Hope, 2009). The doctors discovered that Margaret had a mental illness according to the statement given by her mother. The statement argued that the patient was diagnosed with the mental disorder after giving birth to her two children. The hospital diagnosed Mrs. Greeuw with bipolar and schizoaffective disorders. The results of the post mortem conducted by the Chief Forensic Pathologist, Dr Cookie, however, indicated that Vicky died from bowel obstructions. The report that comprised of photographs showed that the bowel obstructions resulted from constipation, which led to vomiting and piling up of faeces in the rectum of the deceased.
